Sam Matson
Artist Sam Matson is 18 years old. He has been drawing since he was 1 1/2 years old and enjoys many different art mediums, including watercolor, oil, acrylic, charcoal, cartooning, clay, and print making.
Sam had the privilege of participating in a book of children’s art dedicated to the children who lost a loved one on September 11th in the World Trade Center attacks. In April of 2002, he travelled to New York City with several other art students, his sister and mother, and his art teacher to donate these books. He travelled to New York City again in September of 2006 to participate in an art project for those who had lost a loved one on 9/11.
He has participated in many other projects using art to minister to hurting people, including a project at Ronald McDonald house, and creating art for two cancer patients and their families.
Sam won first place at the Woodinville Art Show at age 10 for his “Amish Boy” charcoal drawing. At age 11, he won first place for his “Portrait of Innocence” drawing at the same show. At age 12, he won the People’s Choice Award for his “Child of Hope” at the Woodinville Art Show. At age 13, he won Best in Show for his “Child of Peace” drawing at the Woodinville Teen Art Show, and won first place for his pastel drawing entitled, “Chiara.”
In the fall of 2004, at age 14, he won Best in Show and People’s Choice at the Woodinville Teen Art Show out of 175 entries for his charcoal drawing entitled, “The Children.” In March 2005, he won Best in Show out of over 300 entries at the Woodinville Art Show for his drawing “The Ultimate Design”, and won First Place for his collage, “This is My Life.”
In May of 2006, Sam completed a Woodinville church nursery mural, which he designed and painted over a 9 month period with the help of two other students. He is currently working on a design project for the City of Duvall’s Main Street Restoration Project. He has been commissioned to design four metal benches.
Sam enjoys running and working out. He also likes reading, and playing with his Jack Russell Terriers, Bailey and Cooper. Recently, he has become very interested in design after participating in several team design projects for Target and Nike. In the summer of 2006, he went on an Art and Design Tour of New York City and a side trip to the Rhode Island School of Design.
He attended a three week intensive art program for high school students in the summer of 2007 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He was also mentored by Milan Heger, a fine artist and architect in Seattle, and participated in a competition to design a “green” chair. His design was accepted along with 15 other artists out of thousands of applicants.
Sam plans to apply to art schools this winter. He is interested in Design, Architecture, and Fine Art.
